Spotlight on Area Artists
Recipient of the N.C. Arts Council's 2003 Folk Heritage Award, late fiddler Oscar "Red" Wilson was born in 1920 in Avery County, but lived in nearby Mitchell County most of his life. Growing up in the first half of the 20th century, he was influenced both by the pioneer musical traditions of western North Carolina and the early years of commercial country music. In the 1940s and 1950s he played and recorded with Steve Ledford, Panhandle Pete, Wade Mainer and the Toe River Valley Boys, a bluegrass band that became a fixture at Little Switzerland's Geneva Hall and at the Penland School of Crafts.
