Piedmont Opera

Opera is a popular performing art in North Carolina. Opera Carolina in Charlotte, founded in 1948, is today the largest professional opera company in the Carolinas. Greensboro Opera, in conjunction with Guilford County Schools, presents opera to all fifth graders in public school. The Opera Company of North Carolina in Raleigh was founded in 1996 to bring fresh, dynamic, world-class opera to the state. And Piedmont Opera Theater in Winston-Salem is a professional opera company with an extensive public education component including "opera camp" for elementary-age children. The Diana Wortham Theatre, located in the center of Asheville's vibrant downtown arts scene at the Pack Place Education, Arts and Science Center, is home to the Asheville Lyric Opera. The Long Leaf Opera Festival, founded in Durham in 1998, produces fully staged operas originally written in English and highlighting American composers.
